The City of Greenville’s Ward 5 is now expected to undergo street repairs with the assistance of the Washington County Road Department.
With the latest approval being made during the Washington County Board of Supervisors April 19 meeting, Oxford Place, Netho Drive, Pear Lane and Lisa Drive were approved for assistance by the county road department per the request of Ward 5 councilwoman Tasha Banks.
The BOS waited for Banks to confer with the city’s legal counsel as well as the BOS’ legal counsel to determine the legality of providing street repair services within 12 months of an election before voting on the approval.
“Legally, there is no prohibition to this board’s assistance with city streets at this time,” BOS attorney Willie Griffin said.
Although no timetable has been set for the repairs, Banks was pleased to have the county’s support in her endeavor to get those streets on the county’s list.
The agreement between the city and county as it pertains to the repair work essentially provides that the city will pay for all of the necessary materials and the county will provide its machinery and operators.
Banks approached the BOS in December regarding Netho Drive and Oxford Place.
District 1 Supervisor Lee Gordon commended Banks on her efforts to improve the streets in her ward, but pointed out that completion of her proposed streets could take as long as two years because the county has only one crew at a time at its disposal.
“I’m saying yes, but I would not put it on top of the list,” he said.
District 5 Supervisor Jerry Redmond said he thinks it will “take a conversation” to determine when county crews would address subsequent city street repairs.
“Whenever you can get to it, we’re satisfied,” Banks said.
