AVON — The Riverside High School volleyball team is off to a perfect 7-0 start this season, and head coach Markeia Brown credits it to both sportsmanship and playing smart.
“The best thing about the players on our team is that they are good sports. This allows them to have fun and enjoy the game. Another quality of the team is that they play smart. You are allowed three hits on the ball each time it goes over the net, so you always have to be smart in determining the best opportunity to win the point,” Coach Brown said.
Coach Brown, a Rosedale native, is in his second season coaching the Lady Bulldog volleyball team. Last season, he coached them to a district championship and a second round berth in the MHSAA Class 2A State Playoffs. This year they are hoping to go even further.
Coach Brown said his team is filled with leaders, like junior Allie Reed, senior Makiya Meads and junior Sydney Sheppeard.
“They are not just leaders on the team, but leaders in the school. Being part of a winning team helps give them confidence when they walk down the halls of school. During PE, I see them teaching younger students how to play the game of softball,” Coach Brown said.
The Lady Bulldogs have also shown plenty of resilience so far this season. For instance in a game against Yazoo High School last week, Riverside lost the first two sets but then stormed back to win three sets in a row to claim the victory. This week they defeated both Humphreys County High School and Greenville High School to move their record to 7-0. The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play two home games next week. They will host South Delta on Tuesday and McEvans on Wednesday.
“We have put in the work, and our goal is to finish the season undefeated. We are going to keep working and take it one game at a time,” Coach Brown said.
