Greenville Christian School boys varsity basketball coach Logan Collins has a talented team that is also willing to work hard. This hard work ethic was reinforced to Coach Collins after a recent game.
“In our second game of the season, we had missed 47 layups. So, the next day at practice we wound up doing a crazy amount of sideline sprints, push ups, sit ups and jumping jacks. I really expected somebody on the team to quit because it was the hardest practice I have ever put any team through. But, not one of them complained about having to do the work and not one of them quit.
“So, their heart and determination is there, it is just taking a little time to jell with Pat (Travis) really being the only one to have any playing experience last year.”
Coach Collins calls senior power forward Patrick Tarvis the vocal leader of his team. Travis leads by both his play and his words.
“Pat does all the little things,’ Coach Collins said. “He is not just one of the best players on the floor, he is also won of the ones who is going to be working the hardest.”
Other key Saints this season include Ashton Powell (junior, small forward), Alton Riley (senior, point guard), Dillon Harper (senior, shooting guard) and junior DJ Scott (junior center).
After winning state championships in 2021 and 2022, Coach Collins and his Saints were knocked out in the state semifinals last season to Tunica Academy. It is going to take a lot of hard work, but this year’s Saints have their eyes set on another big run when the postseason begins in a few months.
“We have some guys with talent, but some of them are younger and they have to mature a little bit more and understand the differences between high school basketball and junior high basketball,” Coach Collins said. “I have a bunch of guys and a bunch of talent, it is trying to find the puzzle pieces that fit together.”
