Greenville quarterback Jeff Davis zipped the pass to Jayden Brooks for a touchdown Tuesday during 7-on-7 scrimmages. A few minutes later Davis threw another TD to Tre’ Brooks.
Davis, a soon-to-be senior, was making it look easy Tuesday as his team won three of the four scrimmages it played against O’Bannon, Riverside and Leflore County.
“I am really getting better with my progressions and finding the open man,” Davis said while he rested between scrimmages on the sideline. “I have learned that you have to let the game come to you and take what the defense is giving you.”
Greenville High coach Quinatrus McCray said he was pleased with his team’s overall performance Tuesday.
“The players learn a lot at these 7-on-7s. The receivers are learning how to run their routs better and how to get off jams at the line.”
McCray is heading into his fourth season as the head coach of the Hornets who begin their season on August 26 at Gentry; however, due to the pandemic, this will be only the second time in his tenure that his players will have a complete offseason to prepare.
“This is only the second time we have had a good spring practice,” Coach McCray said. “I feel confident in our team heading into the fall. We have done a lot to help the kids grow as players.”
A strength of this season’s Hornets looks to be in the trenches with a line that is anchored by Bryan Jones Jr., Quintarus McCray II and Willie Green.
“We are still young, but our line should really help us compete. Some of them have played before and have some good experience.”
Coach McCray is also expecting strong growth from Davis, his quarterback.
“Jeff is a smart kid and a smart player and he is only getting better.”
Said Davis, “We are way better than last year’s team because we are more disciplined. Our success as a team is going to come down to how much we continue to work hard. Our coaches are putting us in the right positions and now it is up to us to be successful.”
