The Greenville High School boys basketball team played three quarters of near flawless basketball Tuesday night against visiting Cleveland Central. But, the Wolves (19-7) would rally in the fourth quarter to beat the Hornets 49-44.
Greenville (8-13, 2-3 in Region 25A) led 33-21 at the end of the third quarter, but the Hornets were outscored 28-11 in the final period.
My guys played really hard last night, but we couldn't close the game out,” Greenville coach Janee Ford said. “We had Costly turnovers that allowed Cleveland Central to get back in the game and ultimately win. We did everything right in my eyes, except keep the ball in our hands and win the game."
Behind solid offensive play from Le’Kinton McNeil Jr., the Hornets built their lead in the second quarter where they outscored the Wolves 15-9 in the period.
Making eight of his 12 shot attempts in the game, McNeil Jr. led Greenville with 25 points. NaQuan Smith finished with six points and Demarques Gibson scored five points. De’Marion Gibson had four points and six rebounds. Isaiah Thomas had seven points, four assists and four steals.
Tuesday’s victory for Cleveland Central was their second win over Greenville this season. On Jan. 10, the Wolves beat Greenville 72-40.
Greenville’s next game is Friday night at Lake Cormorant.
