Under first year coach Timothy Speech, the Greenville High School boys basketball team is experiencing the ups and downs of trying to build a championship level program.
Last Thursday, for example, the Hornets (5-4) went on the road and defeated Humphreys County 62-57 but came back home the next night and fell 61-39 to Coahoma County.
“We have come a long way, but we are still having these 50/50 weeks where we will win a game and then loose game. As a whole we are improving, but we are still experiencing growing pains.”
In their victory over Humphreys County, four Hornets scored in double figures. Senior Gymanuel Wells led Greenville with 15 points. Senior Isaiah Thomas scored 11 points. Sophomore Tamarion Rhodes scored 12 points and senior Franklin Bennett scored 10 points. Thomas and sophomore Quinterrius Jones led the Hornets with eight rebounds each.
The Hornets trailed the Cowboys by one point at halftime by then won the third quarter 19-13 to take the lead.
In their loss to Coahama County on Friday, the Hornets let the game slip away in the second half. Greenville led the Red Panthers 24-23 at halftime but were outscored 20-4 in the third quarter.
“We made some crucial mistakes, and then we kind of staring hanging our heads,” Coach Speech said.
Rhodes led Greenville Friday with 12 points.
