Cauy Smith and Walker Garrett each came through in the clutch on Thursday to help lift the Washington School baseball team to a pair of comeback victories in a double header against Indianola Academy.
Smith’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Generals to a 11-10 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Smith, a sophomore, finished the game four for four at the plate with two singles and a double.
In the second game, Walker Garrett singled in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive home two runs.
Garrett, just an eighth, also played big on the mound. He pitched five innings of relief work after starter Brayden Harmon left with an injury.
“We had a lot of players shine for us, but Walker and Cauy really stood out,” Washington School coach Hunter Palasini said. “We have a lot of young kids and we are learning how to win. One of the things you need to do to be a good team is learn how to come from behind. And that is something you don’t know how to do until you do it.”
The Generals (3-5) dug themselves a big hole in each game Thursday.
In the first game, Washington School spotted the Colonels six quick runs in the first two innings and the Generals trailed 8-2 after the third. But the Generals bounced back with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
Wade Fratesi had three hits and scored two runs in Game 1, and Jones Roberson had two hits and drove home two runs.
In the second game, Indianola Academy scored five quick runs in the top of the first inning. Again, the Generals fought back and scored five runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning and then scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-5 lead.
“We spotted them leads in both games, and we had to battle back all night. We didn’t play a clean game, but there is something to be said for battling back and doing what it takes to win,” Coach Palasini said.
Patrick Spencer went four for four in the second game with five RBI. Jones Roberson had three hits. Wade Fratesi had two hits, and scored a run and had an RB!. Hunter Trussell went three for three with three runs.
Walker Anthony led the Colonels with three hits and two runs.
