The Greenville Hornets started Friday night with a sensational touchdown on their opening drive of the game. Then, for the rest of the first half, they battled visiting Lake Cormorant play for play and trailed by just six points at halftime.
But finally, in the second half, the Hornets just didn’t have enough in the tank as they fell to their district opponent 30-7.
“We have a lot of linemen who are playing both ways, and that just doesn’t really work in Class 5A football. The kids fought hard, but we just don’t have the numbers. I don’t know what the answer is. I feel like their is a dark cloud over our program.”
The game began, however, like it might just be the Hornets’ night. On Greenville’s opening drive, Hornet quarterback Charmarion Daniels connected on 35 yard touchdown pass to receiver Ladarius Williams. The score came on a fourth and long play, and Williams caught the pass after it was tipped by a Gator (2-3, 1-0 in Region 1-5A) defender and landed right into Williams’ arms as he stepped into the endzone.
The Gators answered right back on their first possession when running back Chris Chrestensen ran in a five-yard touchdown, but the Hornets blocked the extra point to maintain a 7-6 lead.
The Greenville defense stayed strong in the first half and when Marcus Miller recovered a fumble to stop a Lake Cormorant with four minutes left, Greenville (0-4, 0-1) had a chance to take the lead into halftime.
The Hornets will look to pick up their first win of the season next Friday when they travel to Columbus.
