Playing against the third ranked team in all of the MAIS, the Greenville Christian School Saints (3-5) scored two defensive touchdowns to make things interesting on the road Friday night in their 49-28 loss to Hartfield Academy (7-1).
GCS’s Derryon Hines recovered a fumble and returned it 70 yards to make the score 14-6 in the first quarter. Greenville Christian’s Matt Suber also returned an interception for a touchdown.
Trey Rhodes, of the Saints, scored GCS’s other touchdown on a 56-yard run.
“We made some mistakes, but I was pleased with our effort. We played hard and we played better in the second half than we did in the first half,” GCS coach Jon Reed McLendon said.
McLendon added that he likes how his team is looking heading into the postseason. The Saints end their regular season next week at home against Delta Streets. Many of the Saints losses this season have come against teams from higher classifications. The Saints are in Class 3A, but they have played against Jackson Prep, Jackson Academy and Ridgeland Academy, who all play in Class 6A.
