The Greenville Christian School girls basketball team never lost faith as the Lady Saints came back to beat Amite School Center 35-33 Wednesday night in the MAIS Class 4A Basketball Tournament at Clinton Chirstian Academy.
The game was tied in the final moments when Greenville Christian’s Jakayla Coats secured a loose rebound and passed it to Brittany Stallion who made a layup with 6.8 seconds left to put GCS up by two. Amite called time out and set up a play but a steal by GCS secured the game.
“The key to the win was our defense,” Greenville Christian coach Brother Sandifer said. “The game was an ugly hard fought battle and we were just fortunate to come out with the victory.”
With the win, the Lady Saints advance to the Class 4A semifinals against Kirk Academy in a game that will be played Friday at 2:15 p.m. at Clinton Christian.
“Playing Grenada Kirk will be a difficult challenge. They won the North State last week, but I am sure the Lady Saints will show up to play,” Coach Sandifer said.
GCS trailed most of the game in their victory on Friday and were trailing by two points going into the fourth quarter.But the Saints pulled ahead by five with two minutes remaining. Amite fought back and tied the game with 20 seconds left. GCS then took a shot with about 10 seconds remaining when Coats and Stallion made their game-winning plays.
Brittany Stallion scored 12 points and Jakayla Coats added 9.
