Patrick Travis, the Planters Bank Player of the Week, is the type of player who will do anything to help his team win.
Travis, a junior on the Greenville Christian School basketball team, has been instrumental in the success of the Saints this season. Under head coach Logan Collins, the Saints are 10-6 this year but are a perfect 8-0 in conference play. All of their losses have come against much bigger schools.
Greenville Christian is the two-time defending MAIS Class 3A state champions, and the Saints are led this year by a new cast of players who are seeing major minutes for the first time.
Travis is a small forward whose speciality is getting to the rim. He is good at seeing the lane and finishing despite contact.
“Patrick is a kid who will do anything I ask him to do,” Coach Collins said. “He is a fun loving kid and he is always positive.”
Last Thursday in Greenville Christian’s victory over Porter’s Chapel, Travis had a game-high 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Then on Saturday in a victory over St. Aloysius, Travis had 12 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.
Travis is one of three players on the Saints team who have stepped up big time in their new roles. Seniors Trey Rhodes and Matt Suber have also done their part to help GCS win games during this transition year.
For the season, Rhodes leads the team with a 15.8 points per game scoring average. He is also averaging 6.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.1 steals.
Suber, meanwhile, is averaging 10.1 points and 7.1 rebounds this season.
With players like Travis, Suber and Rhodes leading the Saints, Coach Collins said there is no reason why GCS can’t compete for a third-straight state title against the best team’s in MAIS Class 3A.
“The great thing about our team is that we are pretty relaxed and we don’t feel a lot of pressure. We are also very unselfish. I have guys on my team who may only play 30 seconds, but they are going to give it everything they have,” Coach Collins said.
