Greenville High School freshman Precious Smith has been named the Planters Bank Player of the Week for her dominating performance at the Crossett (Ark.) Track Meet last Thursday.
In a meet which featured more than 15 schools, Smith took first place in the 100 meter (13.08) dash and the long jump. She also helped her Hornets win the the 4X400 Meter Relay. Smith also had a third place finish in the 400 Meter Dash (1:07).
Monica Turner, a track coach for the Hornets, said she expects to win many more meets this spring.
“Precious has a great chance of winning the state championship in the long jump. It’s very realistic because she keeps jumping further and further.”
Along with senior Courtney Adams, who finished in second place in both the 800 Meter Run and the 1600 Meter Run, Smith will be a crucial part in helping the Hornets take home team championships this spring, Coach Turner said.
Smith is part of a strong Greenville High girls track team that finished in second place at the meet. Other top Greenville girl finishers include Zaniya Jackson who won first place in the Triple Jump (32-01) and third place in the Long Jump (14-09) , Zora Davis who won third place in the 200 Meter Dash (28.45), Rakaria Wright who finished second in the 400 Meter Dash (1:07). Jenazia McNair who finished second in Long Jump (15-7) and Brianna Lance who finished in third place in the 100 Meter Hurdles.
The Greenville High School boys also finished in second place as a team in Crossett.
In the boys meet, Greenville High School’s Willie Wilson won first place in the 800 Meter Dash (2:13) and second place in the 200 Meter Dash (:54).
David Newsome finished in first place in the 300 Meter Hurdles (41.77) Brandon Leslie finished in second place in the Discus (118’)
Benjamin Davenport finished in second place in the 800 Meter Dash (2:19). Brycen Davenport finished in third place in the 1600 Meter Run (5:25). Jeremy Hawkins finished in second place in the 3200 Meter Run (13:31).
The boys relay teams also had a fine showing at the meet. The Hornets won the Boys 4X800 Meter Relay (Willie Wilson, Jacob Turner, Brycen Davenport, Steven Selmon) and the 4X400 Meter Relay (Willie Wilson, Benjamin Davenport, David Newsome, Jacon Turner).
