The Greenville High School boys basketball team is by no means a finished product, but through four games this season Hornet head coach Janee’ Ford sees the potential of what her team can become.
The Hornets (2-2) defeated previously unbeaten Humphreys County on Tuesday night in Greenville. Greenville jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first round and led by double digits for most of the night.
“We still have a long way to go,” Coach Ford said. “It is better than our first home game, but we still have a long way to go. We still have guys getting acclimated to playing organized ball since they missed a year.
“What I like best is that my players have heart. They don’t back down. They won’t let down. They are always on the go. They play with spirit.”
Leading the way for the Hornets on Tuesday was senior guard Aaron Davenport. Davenport led all Greenville scorers with 16, and his back-to-back drives to the basket in the fourth quarter squashed a Humphreys County late comeback attempt.
“Aaron is the leader of the team, and he is the heartbeat of the team,” Ford said. “He is the one who moves everything, and he gets everything running.”
Junior Antonian Johnson, who has now scored in double digits in three straight games, finished with 14 points and four rebounds.
Senior Tico Lott finished with 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Junior LeKinton McNeil had nine points, and sophomore Isiiah Thomas finished with six.
Greenville built its lead in the second quarter by outscoring the Cowboys 11-5.
The Hornets are scheduled to play on the road at Coahoma County on Friday night before returning to Greenville on Saturday where they will face crosstown rival O’Bannon.
“We know that O’Bannon is always a big game for us, and we are excited to play them on Saturday,” Ford said.
