Greenville High School’s Sheridan Brady is nicknamed ‘Star’ for a reason. When she takes to the cross country course these days, she is the one out front shining brightly.
Last Thursday, Brady, a sophomore, came in first place at the Warrior Cross Country Classic in Senatobia. She finished the 5K race with a time of 23 minutes and 20 seconds.
For this first-place accomplishment, Brady has been named this week’s Planters Bank Player of the Week.
Brady’s success, say her coaches at Greenville, is due to a mixture of hard work and natural talent.
“Star works hard and is ready for all challenges,” said Greenville coach Monica Turner.
“She realized that she was talented in the eighth grade when she was running behind teammates Courtney Adams and MyTy Turner. It is her season to shine and be the star she was born to be.”
“Star is a true mid-distance runner. She runs cross country so she can have the stamina to run the 1600 and 800 on the track.”
Other top Greenville runners in the girls race included Courtney Adams who finished in eighth place with a time of 25:25, and Orion Griffin who finished in 13th place with a time of 27:32.
Thursday’s victory was not the first for Brady this season.
Two weeks ago, she took home first place at the inaugural Greenville High School-Washington School Cross Country Invitational, which took place inside the levee in Greenville. Washington School’s Lawton Poole finished second with a time of 24:30. Greenville High School’s Courtney Adams finished third with a time of 25:26.
“This feels really good,” Brady said after the race. “I just kept on pushing myself. I started out with a good pace and took the lead in the beginning. I was just thinking I need to do this for my team.”
Brady said her goal is to finish the season strong and help her team do well at the state cross country meet.
