With three players scoring in double digits, the Greenville High School Honeybees soared to a convincing 56-33 home victory Monday night over the Forest Hill Patriots in the opening round of the MHSAA Class 5A State Playoffs. The Honeybees will travel to Ridgeland High School Friday night in the second round of the playoffs.
On Monday, senior A’Niya Miller led Greenville with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Charlisa Barney scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out seven assists and had five steals. Freshman Coriyanna Brown scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
Greenville opened Monday’s game up in the second quarter when they outscored the Patriots 20 to 8 to take a 29-14 lead into the half.
“I liked how we overcame the adversity we faced,” Greenville coach Dakedreon Lampkin said. “I know that if we keep playing well we can get to where we want to go.”
The victory for the Honeybees Monday night was a total team effort, said Lampkin. Along with his leading scorers, he said players like Tamesha Glasper, Carmen Rhodes, Jakayla Coats, Jariya Watson and Tykeria McCullum all played well.
“I know people like to focus on the scorers, but to be a good team you have to have players who are willing to do all the other things it takes to win basketball games,” Coach Lampkin said.
