CLEVELAND — The Greenville Honeybees season ended Friday night with a 36-29 loss to Lake Cormorant in the consolation game of the Region 2-4A girls basketball tournament at Cleveland Central.
Greenville coach Dakedreon Lampkin blamed the loss on a number of little things that meant the difference between winning and losing.
“There were a couple of times we didn’t block out and a couple of turnovers that added up. It wasn’t the big stuff, but that is the way it goes,” Coach Lampkin said.
The loss Friday meant it was the last time Greenville’s Sierra Liggins and Tialone Banks took the court in Greenville uniforms.
Coach Lampkin thanked the two seniors for the hard work they have put in helping the program, and he said he told his younger players that it is no time to hang their heads.
“I told the young ones that we are not going to sit and dwell on this and feel sorry for ourselves. We just got to get back in the gym this summer and start getting back to work.”
Like last year’s Honeybees' season, this years also had a number of starts and stops due to COVID-19. Greenville had to forfeit a number of games, including key district matchups, in the regular season.
“We are all hoping things return to normal next season, but I am not going to use COVID as an excuse because we were not the only ones who had to deal with it.
In Friday’s game, the Honeybees took a 26-23 lead into the fourth quarter but scored only six points in the stanza.
With :55 seconds in the game, Banks, who was named to the All-Region team stole the ball and made a layup to cut the Lake Cormorant lead to 33-28. But, some crisp passing in the final minute, by the Gators and three free throws helped seal the game.
