The Greenville High School boys basketball team never stopped in their effort to come back, but, in the end, the Wildcats from Clarksdale just had too many answers in their 55-49 victory.
After multiple lead changes in the first half, the Wildcats (20-3) stayed ahead the entire second half.
Greenville (8-9) trailed by double digits in the third quarter but kept clawing their way back. They almost gave themselves a chance to win it at the end. After senior Justin Juitt made a put back with 1:40 left to play, the Hornets trailed just 48-44.
“I am proud of them because we just kept on fighting,” Greenville assistant coach Terdell Causey said. “We have a very resilient bunch, but we have to play through all the missed calls and bad breaks.
“Tonight’s game was sort of like a practice because it was not a district game. We can take a whole lot of positives and just keep trying to get better each day.”
Greenville head coach Janee’ Ford did not coach Wednesday’s game because she had a meeting scheduled in Jackson. The Hornets return to play Friday night when they host Lafayette.
Greenville senior Aaron Davenport led the Hornets with 21 points. Davenport scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that cut the Clarksdale lead to 47-42 with 1:20 left in the game.
Anrtonian Johnson scored 11. LeKinton McNeil scored nine, and Tico Lott scored six.
Clarksdale was led by the 22 points of Markevious Jackson. Kyle Jones and Kelly Coleman each scored nine.
