The Greenville High School boys basketball team is building its foundation the right way — through its defense.
The Hornet defense threw a shutout in the second quarter of their matchup with Humphreys County allowing no points in the stanza in the game Greenville went on to win 47-37 to improve its record to 6-5.
“I was very happy with our defensive effort,” Greenville High head coach Timothy Speech said. “We are starting to hang our hat on our defense. We are playing as a defensive unit. We are using some extended press and doing a good job of protecting the basket.
Three Greenville players finished the game in double scoring Tuesday. Sophomore Tamarion Rhodes led the Hornets with 11 points, while Gymanuel Wells (who made three 3-pointers) and Isaiah Thomas both scored 10 points. Thomas finished with five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Greenville sophomore Quinterrius Jones led the Hornets with 12 rebounds, 10 defensively. Senior Franklin Bennett grabbed seven rebounds.
The Hornets now have a chance to practice and get better the next few weeks. Their next game is scheduled for Dec. 19 at Greenwood. They then begin district play on January 2 against top ranked Yazoo City.
