The scrimmage between Greenville High School and O’Bannon High School Tuesday night went just about as well as possible for both teams. No players were seriously hurt, and quite a few Hornets and Greenwave players got a chance to show their potential.
The final score in the 40-minute scrimmage read 14-6 in favor of the Hornets with Greenville quarterback Jeff Davis running in a pair of touchdowns.
Davis’ first score, a 7-yard run, came with just 19 ticks left on the clock on the first half. In the second half, Davis scored again, from 12 yards out, with 4:28 left in the scrimmage.
“I think we played great today,” Davis said. “I think this proves that we can be very good when the season begins in the fall. We just have to keep working hard and keep working to reach our potential.”
Greenville head coach Quinatrus McCray said he was pleased with his team’s performance during the scrimmage. This was the first time Coach McCray had a full spring practice with his team since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are young, but we are beginning to look like what could be a good football team,” Coach McCray said. “This is the first real spring I have had in a long while, and I want to thank our administration for helping make that happen.”
McCray said he expects Davis to be his opening day starter this fall.
“He is a team leader, and he is our best athlete so that is why we put him at quarterback.”
Other players who had a strong spring performance for the Hornets include free safety Quintarus McCray Jr., offensive lineman Bryan Jones Jr. and running back Jamarrion Brooks.
On the other side of the field, O’Bannon head coach Lynn Lang said he was proud of the ways his players competed against Greenville High School. In MHSAA, Greenville is a Class 5A school and O’Bannon is a Class 2A school.
“I think the kids and played hard, and it was a good atmosphere,” Lang said. “We want to be in the position where we don’t prepare for what class a team is in, we only prepare for the opponent. We want to be able to play anyone, anywhere at anytime.”
Some of the better performances displayed by Greenwave players this spring included those by linebacker Anthony Brooks, running back Jordan Clark, wide receiver Keyshawn Kingdom and free safety Ashton McKinney.
