Kwinta Green, the new head girls basketball coach at St. Joseph Catholic School, knows what it takes to make a championship caliber team.
In high school, Green played for the Greenville Honeybees under legendary coach Burley Allen. Coach Green started alongside Delta legend and future WNBA star LaToya Thomas on a team that went to the state championship game in 1998.
Coach Green looks back on those days fondly – not just because of all the winning the Honeybees enjoyed.
“I missed just being part of a team,” Coach Green said. “We did everything together. We went to school together. We played basketball together. We played softball together. Everything we did we did it together. It was a great sisterhood.”
Coach Green learned a lot from watching a player as great as LaToya Thomas as well.
“She was so humble, and she never wanted to be the star. She wanted the team dynamic. She could play any position. She could handle the ball and shoot from outside. She played her center position and dominated. We all played our roles and it worked.”
Last season, Coach Green, a math teacher at St. Joseph, was an assistant coach under Kenny Strong. When the position to lead the Fighting Irish came open, Coach Green didn’t hesitate to take the job.
Like the former teams she played on, Coach Green and her team have started with the fundamentals of the game. Key players on this year’s team include Maleah Morris, Catlyn Jackson, Aniya Evans and Kay Kay Holmes.
“The goal for this season is for them to get the experience of playing together. We are going to start with fundamentals because that was always the key. Everybody does their role.
