AVON — The O’Bannon girls basketball team may have been sidelined for three weeks because of COVID-19, but on Tuesday night the Lady Waves showed little rust in their 63-8 victory over Riverside.
The Lady Waves, who had to forfeit four games in their pause, jumped out to a 45-3 lead at halftime and continued their dominance in the second half.
“The girls were ready to play and they came out tonight and played well,” O’Bannon head coach Hardy Patterson said. “The girls definitely missed playing games. They love playing ball, and many of them are hoping to gain college scholarships. They want to play hard to earn those scholarships.”
The Lady Waves, both on the court and on the bench, smiled and celebrated all night long. Maleah Morris scored 16 points to lead the O’Bannon, and Joyia Clark added 14 points. Morgan Cotton scored five points to lead Riverside.
The Greenwaves are led this season by seniors in Jaleah Morris, Joyia Clark, and DAizha Landrum.
O’Bannon also has a potential future star in eighth grader Trumyah McCollough who scored eight points.
O’Bannon’s next basketball game is Friday night at North Side. Despite having to forfeit four district games, all the goals are still out there for the Lady Waves, Coach Patterson said.
“We still have a chance of winning district,” the O’Bannon coach said. “We have put a lot all of practice and hard work into this season, and we are going to go out there and do our best.
“We re just going to play to the best of our abilities.
