In a game called off at halftime because of lightning, Vontrez Rush represented Simmons as homecoming king Friday night and a ruler on the field in his teams’ emphatic 50-0 win against O’Bannon.
Homecoming 2021 became an a beat down of extreme proportions as the home standing Simmons Blue Devils blasted the O’Bannon Greenwaves in high school football Friday night. The two teams hadn’t met in four years, but Simmons quickly reintroduced themselves with seven first quarter touchdowns. Blue Devils linebacker Shemar McClay scored twice on scoop and score fumble recoveries in the stanza. Vontrez Rush scored on a rushing touchdown just 30 seconds into the game and added another just two minutes later. Rush’s brother, Devontae completed two touchdown passes in the first quarter. One to his brother and another to Charles Mallard III. After one quarter of play Simmons led 42-0 as the score invoked the mercy rule. The clock ran continuously for the remainder of the shortened game.
“The score indicates a lopsided win but there are many things that we need to clean up before we get into the thick of the season,” said Simmons head coach Tavares Johnson. “We grade our players individually on assignment based football and there are improvements that we can make.”
Miscues, wayward snaps and penalties thwarted a couple of the Greenwaves promising drives in the first quarter. Freshman quarterback Chandler Wade completed a couple of nice throws downfield on a couple of series to junior wideout Dontrell Byrd against a fierce Blue Devils pass rush.
“We just systematically broke down tonight,” said Greenwaves head coach Lynn Lang. “But we’ll fix it next week.”
O’Bannon will host Palmer and Simmons will travel to face South Delta Friday at 7 p.m.
