Under the leadership of head coach Lynn Lang, the O’Bannon High School football team has made it to the state playoffs for four consecutive. This spring the Greenwaves showed that they were hungry for even more.
O’Bannon played two scrimmage games on Saturday at Delta State. They defeated McEvans 20-6. Chandler Wade and Daren Seals both scored touchdowns and Zay’ veon Gordon scored the last one 20-8 over McEvans
The Waves fell to South Delta 16-6 in the second scrimmage.
“We have a lot of young kids out there, but they fought hard. I think we have a chance to have a pretty good team this fall.”
Leading the charge for O’Bannon is veteran quarterback Chandler Wade. Wade, a senior to be, is a multi-year starter for Coach Wade and has shown steady progress over the last few seasons.
“Chandler did well. He goes through his progressions really well. It is just like math. The more you do it, the better you get at it.”
Coach Lang, who has always been a defensive-minded coach, said he was pleased how his team played on that side of the ball, especially players. He was especially pleased with the play of lineman De’Corion Poindexter who will be an anchor for the Greenwaves defense this fall.
Jamychael Williams, a cornerback and wide receiver, is also expected to have a breakout season in the fall.
In O’Bannon’s win over McEvans, the Greenwave offense gave up a pick-six on their first offensive play, then outscored the Warriors 20-0 the rest of the scrimmage.
With five freshmen starting on the Greenwaves – plus a few eight graders — the challenge for Coach Lang will be getting these youngsters up to speed this summer.
“We have a pretty good group, but we have to work on our consistency.”
