On Friday night Western Line School District boys and girls varsity teams concluded their final regular season game by celebrating the life and legacy of Greenville Police Department Investigator Myiesha Stewart, a former student at O’Bannon High School, who was killed in the line of duty in October of 2022. This ceremony served as a demonstration of the ongoing love and support for Investigator Stewart, her family, and her stellar athletic career at her high school.
"It was very important that we honor Investigator Stewart because she was and still is one of ours," O'Bannon coach Torrione Carter said. "She gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting her community. It was also special because although she graduated from O'Bannon, her father was a Riverside graduate and I applauded Coach Davis and Coach Monroe for helping in that endeavor."
The boys’ game ended with top-seeded Riverside taking a second victory over rival O’Bannon Greenwaves with a score of 72-48. For most of the night, the Bulldogs led the Greenwaves by double digits. The first quarter began with a hungry Bulldog team coasting on a 9-0 run. Greenwaves’ star player Chandler Wade finally found rhythm as he knocks down a corner three to put his team in the books, followed by an inside basket by freshman Landyn Winters and a trip to the free throw line.
Shortly after the Riverside Bulldogs outscored the Greenwaves before the half by 7 buckets. The Greenwaves continued to battle as they trailed their rival. Trevione Lee secured a big time offensive rebound and put back while on another possession Kentravion Castion knocked down a swish three. On the opposite end, Bulldog’s Jaleel Moore continued to create a cushioned lead for the Bulldogs before ending the half as his backboard three banked in. Score at half 37-16.
After the half and following several possession attempts, the Greenwaves got into the flow of things with 8 more contested points from Wade. The Bulldogs went on to close out the game in the fourth quarter as freshman guard Kenny Phillips leaves a lasting impact on crowd when he makes two consecutive three balls near his team's bench. The Riverside Bulldogs will compete in the 2A Region 3 tournament as the top seeded team , while the (6) Green waves will battle it out at (3) Northside Gators home on Monday, February 5th at 7:30pm in Shelby, MS.
"As far as the boys' season, I applauded and love those boys for always going hard and not giving up. This season's team mostly played with two freshman, two sophomores, a junior and senior. But I'm so proud of these guys for staying the course.
