The ball left Shomaria Overton’s bat like a rocket and sailed over the outfield fence.
As she trotted the bases, Overton’s teammates on the Plush Ballers whooped and hollered. They were getting the better of their rivals from Lady Showtime on this Wednesday evening at softball fields at the Wards Recreation Center.
Overton wasn’t the only Plush Baller to have a strong night at the plate. Her other teammates, like Juliet Thomas and Teyanna McCuller, also had stong offensive performances as they helped the Ballers win the game 18-9.
“This is a wonderful feeling,” said Thomas, who is a player/coach for the team. “They beat us last time, but we came back and regrouped and had fun and came out on top.”
Wednesday night was just another night of fun competition for the women’s softball league at Wards. Many of the ladies who compete on the team are former high school athletes. Overton, for example, was a star basketball player at Leland High School and is now playing for Belhaven University in Jackson.
“This is important for us ladies,” Overton said. “It is summertime and people want to get out and do stuff. This keeps people active. It also keeps them in shape. We love talking noise to each other.”
The Lady Showtime team may have fallen on Wednesday, but the players still made a number of nice plays both at the plate and in the field.
Shaterrica Rhodes went 2 for 3 for Lady Showtime, and her night included a inside-the-park home run. Ashley Rucker, meanwhile, went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single.
“I have been playing in this league since 2014,” Rucker said. “This league is so much fun, and it keeps you in shape. We take this very serious.”
