ARCOLA— Falling 28-6 to the Humphreys Academy Rebels (3-0) in their home opener, the Deer Creek Warriors are now 0-3 but remain confident that their record doesn’t reflect who they are as a team.
Head coach Benny McLendon pointed out that the opponents the Warriors have faced so far have been either a 2A or 3A school. The Warriors lost to Sharkey-Issaquena Academy 8-6 in their first game of the season. Last week Porter’s Chapel Academy defeated Deer Creek 45-20 in a non-conference matchup.
However, the Warriors may be well on their way to finding their footing with the leadership of its senior quarterback/running back tandem — Ethan and Noah Allegrezza. Noah scored the lone touchdown for the Warriors and Ethan made quite an impact on the ground against the Rebel defense as well.
“Without those two boys, we wouldn’t be anywhere,” McClendon said. “They’re good leaders and without them, we’d be in bad shape.”
McLendon highlighted each player’s unique strength which for Noah, is athleticism and Ethan, his leadership and attention to detail.
“We’ve just gotta battle through it and try to get through some of the games we feel we have a chance to win...we’ve still got to work hard and get better,” he said.
