St. Joseph Catholic School’s Roury McCloyen is leaving the Irish as what he has been his entire career — a state champion.
On Saturday at Jackson Prep at the MAIS Class 4A State Track meet, McCloyen won his fifth and sixth tate championships. At the state meet, his shot put throw of 62 feet, 1 inch was 18 feet farther than his nearest competition. His discus throw of 189 feet, five inches was 13 feet farther than his nearest rival.
McCloyen, who will be part of the Mississippi State track team next season, is no stranger to mighty throws. Two weeks ago he broke his own state records in both the shot put and discus, with throws of 195 feet, 11.25 inches and 64 feet, 4.5 inches, respectively.
Other top St. Joseph finishers at the state meet include: Donnie Smith, who finished third in the high jump; CJ Moore who placed fifth in the long jump; and Victor Baker who finished fifth in the 800 meters.
