AVON — The Riverside Lady Bulldogs dominated from behind the 3-point arch and sealed the win with a final score of 60-19 Tuesday over neighboring rival Leland Lady Cubs. The Bulldogs moved to a 7-5 record.
Early in the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run led by Makiya Meads with a pair of 3-pointers from behind the arch. Teammate Alexandria Johnson also chimed in with a couple of plays of her own including a three pointer and then capitalized on an and-1 play.
The Bulldogs held the Cubs scoreless until the second minute mark of the third quarter. Finally, Leland’s Oreyonna Wright was able to make a power drive towards the rim to draw a foul and chipped in a pair of free throws.
The Bulldogs then made an attempt to keep control of the game and halt the dribble drives with a full court press.
A host of Bulldogs were able to make several steals and layups until Leland’s Soryhia Williams rejects an easy bucket from inside of the paint. Williams also came down with powerful rebounds for her team during the second half.
Going into the 4th quarter, the Lady Bulldogs led by more than 20 points. Head coach, Daneshea Davis applauded how her younger players stepped up when their time came. “You have to mold the young ones now. With a lead like we had tonight it’s important to get them in and get that experience.”
Coach Davis specially mentioned her eighth grade player, Kamaya Evans, who has now transitioned over to the varsity team. Evans scored later in the 4th quarter. Davis added that no matter the score or team, she always expects her players to get better and improve for the next match.
Riverside boys 65, Leland 27
The Riverside Bulldogs’ strong second half performance gave them the cushion they needed to get pass the Leland Cubs. During the first half of game, both teams would share the lead as each team consecutively made back to back buckets. The Bulldogs led at the half 22-19.
With the biggest lead of night, the Bulldogs went on a dynamic 12-0 run in the 3rd quarter. The Bulldogs went on to shut down the Cubs and pocketed another win. The score was 56-27.
