HOLLANDALE — The Riverside High School girls basketball team accomplished a feat that hasn’t been done for a long time — they beat the Simmons Devilettes.
The Lady Bulldogs’ 48-42 victory over Simmons Friday night was a credit to the hard work of Coach Danesha Davis’s team. Beating a program that has been as dominant over the years as Simmons isn’t easy.
“It shows that when you work hard and play together that good things can happen. The best part of the game is how well our players communicated. I didn’t have to get on them that much,” Coach Davis said.
“We are starting to change the mentality of our program. These schools have been beating us for years. I can’t remember a time that we ever beat Simmons.”
The Lady Bulldogs (6-5) were led in scoring by Karlasia Lewis who netted 20 points. Allanah Turner scored 11 points and Makiya Meads scored eight points.
Akiah Prince led Simmons with 22 points.
“The girls just weren’t as focused as they should have been and we didn’t play up to our ability,” Simmons Coach Bernita Alexander said. “Our kids just never got into the game, and we couldn’t get Vontasia Rush going.
Simmons’ record fell to 7-3 this season. The Lady Bulldogs and Blue Devils have now split two games this season with Simmons opening the season with a 45-41 victory on Nov. 9.
