The Lady Riverside Bulldogs visited opponent Leland Lady Cubs in a well known rivalry match. The Lady Bulldogs escaped with a double digit win led by Qu’Niya Jackson and Karlasia Lewis, both scoring 15 points each. The Bulldogs defeated the Cubs with 49-24. The Cubs fall to a 1-3 after loss while Riverside moves to 2-2 on the season.
On both sides of the floor, there are a mixture of veteran and rookie players.
The Lady Bulldogs made several promising plays to cut the lead with young players who did not shy away from the match and collaborated on important free throws and capitalized on several drives to the basket.
“The players are young and still learning. As they keep playing and begin to develop, they will be good”, Leland’s second-year head coach Veronica Walker said. “We have to let this one go and keep preaching one game at a time.” The Lady Bulldogs faced North Side the next day in Shelby, MS.
The fourth quarter began with a double digit lead as Riverside's Lewis swished in consecutive three pointers from the perimeter. She helped the Bulldogs gain the biggest lead of the night and closed out the game. Davis, in her second year as head coach, applauded her team on the victory. Davis said tonight her team “focused on defense and communication and it worked.”
Coach Walker said that “Riverside never quit tonight”. Walker continues to work daily with her squad and is expecting success with her program in Leland.
The Lady Bulldogs will face another rival team on Dec. 12 at South Delta in Rolling Fork, MS at 7pm. The Lady Cubs have a busy week of contests. They will compete against the Charleston Lady Tigers on Dec. 5th, O’Bannon Lady Waves on Dec. 6th (home game), and Humphrey’s County on Dec. 8th. All three games will start at 6pm.
