The Riverside Lady Bulldogs were victorious as they dominated opponent Humphrey’s County Cowgirls in a double header Tuesday evening. Riverside put away the Cowgirls in a straight set during the second match (25-12,25-21,25-12). Third season head coach Markeia Brown was impressed with the team’s performance. Brown says that “great digging out on the floor and great hustling was the key to edging both victories. Last season Brown led the Lady Bulldogs to a 16-1 record and a state playoffs appearance. The Bulldogs are looking to continue that same path.
During the opening set of the second match, Lady Bulldogs’ Madelyn Moulder dives after the ball to send one back over the net to the opposing team allowing the team to take a ten-point lead over the Cowgirls as the ball landed campfire inside of lines. Later teammate Sydney Sheppard scores two points consecutively as one of those points comes from a dig at center line attacking open gaps in the Cowgirls’ defense.
The Cowgirls eventually regrouped and started a desperate run as they came within single digits of the Lady Bulldogs in set two. The Lady Bulldogs were able to break away late during set 2 as several points were scored by aces and campfire plays.
During the final set, the Bulldogs’ Dakota Young impressively sends a “shot” over the net to clinch the final set as they go on to protect their home court. Coach Brown says, “everyone on roster is expected to do great things this season. This year our focus is to improve our serving and hustle to make contact and play on every ball that comes across the net.”
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Tuesday, August 27th as they host the West Bolivar Lady Eagles at home. The match is set to open at 6:30pm.
