LELAND — The Simmons Blue Devils rolled on to 6-0 Friday night after blanking the hosting Leland Cubs (0-7) 42-0.
This, without a few of their key players like senior wideout Chartavian Bethany and running back Prentavis Madison.
Although the box score may not necessarily reflect such, the Leland Cubs were not completely lacking in effort as they forced a handful of turnovers with one coming by way of a forced fumble and recovery by freshman Nick Allen in Blue Devil territory and a turnover on downs in the third quarter.
Those turnovers, however, failed to yield any scoring from the Cubs.
Between the relentlessness of the Blue Devils D-line and rushing attack that could be solely attributed to junior running back and defensive end Kenzavius Lundy who accounted for four rushing touchdowns – two of which were 30 plus yards – the Cubs had their work cut out for them.
Junior linebacker Jamarion Lundy came away with a sack along with a TFL and QB pressure package.
Quarterback Tyrone Buchanan III completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to senior wideout Talavion Seals halfway through the second quarter and sophomore wideout Kamaal Williams capped the game off with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Kenzavius Lundy, who accumulated well over 100 rushing yards, attributes his dominance to his sheer athleticism along with hard work.
He knows the Blue Devils’ success does not come by way of individualism, but rather teamwork.
When asked what he admired most about the team he plays with, he responded, “The energy. The energy we all bring and how it drives us to win.”
Lundy was also asked about his and his teammates’ approach to overcoming mistakes during the game.
“We just stay calm and try to fix it. That’s what our coach tells us,” he said. “Coach just pulls us to the side and talks to us and tells us we just have to fix it and get better.”
The Blue Devils will host the Shaw Hawks (0-6) this Friday.
