It’s a long way to go until the high school football season begins, but it seems clear the Simmons Blue Devils will once again be juggernaut.
In a scrimmage game at Delta State recently, Simmons soundly defeated Rosa Fort High School 26-0.
“What pleased me most was how our defense played. We were gang tackling them and making all the plays we needed to in order to stop thm” Simmons coach Derrick Hooker said.
The Blue Devils went 11-1 last season in Coach Hooker’s second season at the helm, and, as their scrimmage victory revealed, Simmons has tons of players returning from that campaign eager to make their mark on the tradition rich program.
The 2024 squad will include a number of experienced veterans who will be entering their senior seasons like running backs Prentavis Madison and Eddie George, defensive end Kanzavius Lundy.
Junior-to-be quarterback Tyrone Buchanan will also return under center. “Tyrone is progressing really well,” Coach Hooker said. “He knows to trust the offense and make good decisions.”
The Blue Devil defense will be anchored by cornerback Armani Strahan, TJ Summerall and Torrence Wilson.
“We have the potential to be a good team, but everyone has to stay healthy and get focused. We have to make sure they are in physical shape.”
