LOUISVILLE — The St. Joseph Catholic School football team not only clinched the District 2-4A Championship Friday night with a 42-35 road victory over Winston Academy, but the Irish also proved that they can be a physical rushing team that can take control of games when they need to.
St. Joseph running back Kye Nelson was the top rusher for the Irish all night long. It was Nelson’s strong running that helped him build a two touchdown lead for most of the second half.
Two bad snaps by the St. Joe (5-1) offense would allow Winston (4-3) to stay in the game, but Nelson would come up big once again to seal the game.
“We played a real good football team, and their tailback (Omar Scott) played really well,” Coach Baker said. “Kye was breaking tackles and clocking real good. He also scored all of our extra points.”
“We showed that we can run the ball when we need to, and we have the weapons to get it done.”
St. Joseph quarterback C.J. Moore scored the Irish’s first two touchdowns.
