The Washington School varsity football team’s success this season is due to much more than a few great players. The Generals are 8-1 heading into their Friday night regular season finale against visiting Pillow Academy because of total team buy-in. And, perhaps, no players have bought in more than the Generals who make up both the offensive and defensive lines.
“We have more wins this year than I have had in all my other years combined in football,” said senior defensive end Luke McPherson. “It feels good to bring Washington School back to the glory days like everyone always talks about. We have started working together from day one. We are smaller than most everybody we play against, but we are successful because we have that dog in us.”
Part of the Generals success, say these linemen, is due to the fact they have been working together for so many years. Juniors Willie Green and Keegan Williams are the only two newcomers to the O-line and D-line this year, with both Green and Williams filling in seamlessly.
“It is awesome to finally be able to put it together our senior year,” said defensive lineman Daniel Signa. “The friendships that we have built together have been amazing.”
The linemen agree that head coach Todd Lott and his coaching staff have been instrumental in the program’s turnaround.
Coach Lott is in his 35th year of coaching high school football. Last year was Coach Lott’s first season back in his second stint as the head man of the Generals. Coach Lott is a Greenville native graduated from Washington School in 1984 and later coached the football team to state championships in 2008 and 2009. Last season, Coach Lott’s Generals finished the season with just two victories. Behind cohesive and hard working offensive and defensive lines, they have already far exceeded these recent seasons.
“The strength of this team is that everyone is willing to work. They bring a great attitude to the field each day,” Coach Lott said.
