Trailing 3-1 at halftime with their season on the line, the Washington School boys soccer team came out in the second half and dominated their home game against Bayou Academy Wednesday afternoon.
Five minutes into the second half, Prentiss Doolittle knocked in a goal to put the Generals just one goal down. But for the next half hour of soccer, no matter how hard the Generals tried and no matter how many great opportunities they made for themselves, the ball just would find the back of the net.
A victory would have given Washington a berth in the MAIS State Soccer Playoffs. Instead, the Generals fell 3-2 and had their season end Wednesday.
Said head coach Jeff Giachelli, “We played slow the first half and had some mistakes and gave away three goals that should have never happened. In the second half, we dominated the game and had multiple opportunities. It was not meant to go our way.
“Last year, we were 0-6 in conference and this year we are 3-3. We should be playing Monday.”
The Generals’ first half goal was scored by William McGee.
The two teams from Washington’s conference that advanced to the state playoffs are Delta Streets and Pillow Academy.
Giachelli said he was proud of his entire team this season, especially the seven seniors who helped all season with their leadership. These seniors are Christian Bitt, Peyton Walker, Patrick Spencer, Riley Potter, Pranoy Ganaju, Owen Hardin, and Aidan Jones.
“The seniors we have set a high standard this year,” Coach Giachelli said.
