GREENVILLE — Washington School will compete in a new MAIS district next season, following sweeping changes to the association’s athletic classifications. The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) is eliminating Class 4A and reorganizing its member schools into three classes—1A, 2A, and 3A—beginning next fall.
Washington School, which previously faced schools in a higher classification, has been assigned to Class 2A, District 3. The new district features Carroll Academy, Greenville Christian School, Indianola Academy, Riverfield Academy, St. Joseph Catholic-Greenville and nearby rival Washington School, reflecting increased regional focus and freshness in competition.
The MAIS realignment is part of a larger effort to streamline postseason play and maintain competitive balance. The organization will continue using its power point system to determine football playoff teams, with districts earning points based on regular-season wins, losses and the strength of their opponents.
Under the new structure, MAIS will crown two champions in Class 3A, while schools in Classes 2A and 1A will compete in subdivided districts. Other notable district changes include the reassignment of Greater Praise Christian Academy, Lee Academy and Marshall Academy to Class 2A District 1, and Bayou Academy, Madison-St. Joseph Catholic, Magnolia Heights and Pillow Academy forming Class 3A District 1.
