Louisiana native Madison McPherson was introduced Tuesday as the new ag-agent for Mississippi State University Extension Service of Washington County during the Board of Supervisors regular meeting.
The BOS voted 4-1 at their last regular meeting to approve the hiring of McPherson as recommended by Jennifer Russell, Extension Agent IV for MSU Extension Service of Washington County.
An agricultural or ag-agent is responsible for providing leadership and coordination for the county extension educational effort in Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, 4-H Youth Development and Enterprise and Community Resource Development.
McPherson is currently enrolled in MSU’s Master of Agribusiness Management program and studied Agribusiness at Louisiana Tech University.
“One of the things that I do want to see Madison do for Washington County is try to get our livestock started back up with 4-H. Basically most of all the jobs in our office require us to do 4-H work, which means that all of us have something to do with you,” Russell said to the BOS.
With this being McPherson’s first “big-girl job” as she cheerfully described it, Russell has ensured that McPherson gets the necessary training to execute her duties.
“I’m really excited to get involved with these 4-H kids. I was in 4-H from fourth grade all the way to high school graduation so I have a few plans I’d like to try and do with them,” said McPherson. “I’m also really excited to get to know a bunch of the producers in the area and let them know they have me and the Delta Research Extension Center in Stoneville as a resource.”
