The Rev. Dick Boiling pulled over to the side of Wetherbee Street, a few days ago, and stopped his car in response to our New Year's greeting.
"Come on in the house, and sit a spell," we insisted, and so he did.
It was sort of like old-home week at that, for Mother hadn't seen the Rev. Dolling since 1917, (when he was fresh out of divinity school) and when Dick, John Alexander, and a young preacher from Aberdeen stayed at our house, in the course of a state-wide drive for funds for Presbyterian Church schools in Mississippi.
Names were mentioned, folks we hadn't thought of in years, and Dick could put his finger on them all. In many instances, he could relate their state of health providing, that is if he hadn't already finalized them with a funeral oration. And among those mutual friends who are still in the land of the living. Dr. Bolling was distressed to report a high prevalence of suffering from arthritis.
Whereupon did Old Stuff turn the switch a little higher on the electric pad which rested against our throbbing knee joint, then squirm, ever so slightly, within the plastic brace which Is so reminiscent of the Monitor, if not the Merrimac. And all the while we made a mental note to ask Virginia (Mrs. Gervys) Lusk for permission to publish her husband's famed arthritis diet in Mostly Old Stuff.
The diet has helped a lot of people, among them Gervys himself, Mrs. Frank Robertshaw, Mrs Marvin Meadors, and Slim Hollman. In giving us permission to publish the diet, Mrs. Lusk also very graciously gave us a briefing as to the man who originated same.
His name Is- Dan Dale Alexander. He is a medical technician, thirty-two years old. and lived the first fourteen years of his life in Little Rock, Arkansas. His book, "ARTHRITIS AND COMMON SENSE", is in its third printing, and the author is now busy with a revised edition. Mr. Alexander lived In Newington, Connecticut, but travels extensively in research work. His wife is an artist and designer, and they have two small children.
The Lusk family heard of him through a New Orleans kinsman of Ferd Moyse, who sent them a copy of the Alexander book. Mr. Alexander has made two trips here, once from Pittsburgh and once from Tulsa. He is a remarkable personality, and his dream is a great health center, located preferably in Boston, and devoted exclusively to the study and treatment of arthritis.
Herewith the diet:—
Sweets of all kinds are out. No candy, syrup, sugar, or preserves.
Nothing sour, such as vinegar, lemon, lemon juice, grapefruit, grapefruit juice, grapes, or any other acid fruit. You may eat sweet oranges but only when mixed with cod liver oil.
Don't use vegetable oils or animal greases, such as lard, margarine, or oleo. Don't eat avocado pears.
Don't cook vegetables with fat meat. Don't drink water with your meals or until three or four hours after meals. But you may drink water 30 minutes before your next meal. The reason for this is that the basis of this treatment Is cod liver oil, and remember "oil and water do not mix." The principle involved here is that the oil finds its way into the affected joints and provides them with lubrication, thus restoring them to usability.
Don't eat cream of wheat, and don't eat grits.
Eat plenty of medium-rare liver and beef. Use pure butter on all liver and meat when preparing same, and put pure butter on all toast and bran.
Eat plenty of green salad, using green lettuce, green cabbage, green onions, and green celery, all chopped up together. Do not use white-colored leaves. These green salads are a MUST.
Drink homogenized Vitamin D sweet milk at room temperature, or slightly warm. Never drink it if it is chilled or cold. Warm milk will not turn to calcium, but cold milk will.
Take one tablespoonful of cod liver oil (mint-flavored Is best to take) four hours after your last evening meal. In three or four weeks pain should disappear, or show marked improvement. Continue with the tablespoonful of cod- liver oil until fingernails get soft, liquid wax commences to run slightly in the ear, and hair and skin begin to get oily. Then you can cut the dose in half, mixed with orange juice.
At breakfast, use two tablespoons of wheat germ over cereal and toast. You may also have crisp bacon, eggs cooked in pure butter, and always at least three large green leaves of lettuce. Drink plenty of warm milk, eat plenty of bananas, eat liberal shares of pure butter, and say your prayers every night. Thanks, Virginia, and thank you Dan Dale Alexander.

P.S. Get yourself a copy of "ARTHRITIS AND COMMONSENSE" and let it be your second Bible leastways 'til the swelling goes down.
