JaQuandra Sprouse, native of Arcola, organized a scholarship for seniors who live in Arcola.
The “I Love Arcola” is awarded to an Arcola graduating senior that attends Simmons High School, where Sprouse is an alumnus and teacher at.
“The purpose behind the scholarship is to bless students from Arcola because I didn’t have that,” Sprouse said. “I just believe that God uses everyone for different purposes and mine happens to be somewhere in between inspiring and teaching.
“If you’re ever in a position to give back then you should. This is the town first ever scholarship,”she continued. “I love the kids in Arcola and it’s hard to believe that I’m all grown up and I played in those same Arcola streets as a child”
The scholarship requirements are 2.5 GPA, 400 word essay, proof of residence and volunteer community service hours. It is a $400 dollar scholarship and given all at once. Applications are available at Simmons High School. The deadline is May 3.
She plans to continue the scholarship every year. This year’s winner will be selected by non-local teachers and presented at Simmons Class Night on May 23.
