The applicants for the Oct. 7 Primary Election for mayor and council seats for wards 1, 2 and 6 are set.
All applicants must first be certified to become a candidate. Democratic candidates will be certified by the Municipal Democratic Executive Committee and Independent candidates will be certified by the Municipal Election Commission.
Advertisements for the election were held in the May 12, 19 and 26 editions of the Delta Democrat-Times and applications were due by Aug. 8.
For the Democratic party, the winners will face off with any Independent challengers in the general election set for Dec. 9.
Because there are no Independent Party challengers for Ward 2, the seats will be decided in the Primary election.
There are no Republican Party challengers for any of the positions.
For the mayor’s seat, incumbent Mayor Errick D. Simmons, Democrat, is running unopposed.
For Ward 1, Incumbent Councilman Al Brock, Independent, will be running against Oliver Lamar Johnson, Democrat. in the Dec. 9 election.
For Ward 2, Incumbent Councilwoman Lois Hawkins, Democrat, is running against Matthew Dee and Patrick Ervin, both Democrats, in the primary election.
For Ward 6, Incumbent Councilman James Wilson Sr., Democrat, is running against Chauncey Wright, Independent in the Dec. 9 election.
