At their regular Monday meeting, Washington County Board of Supervisors President Carl McGee informed the board he and others recently met with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety about bringing a driver’s license exam and renewal station back to Greenville.
McGee formally requested the board’s permission to begin official plans with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety in an attempt to establish the station in downtown Greenville and the board voted unanimously for the motion.
“Recently, we received the deed from the Depot Building on Washington Avenue and we’ve had them come out to take a look and take photos and we’ve offered that as a place of driver’s license testing and renewal,” McGee said.
McGee also made a request from the board to approach the IC&G Railroad company about acquiring the property surrounding the depot building which was unanimously favored.
“Right now, we’re trying to make sure that IC&G Railroad owns it and if so, I’ve got permission to inquire about the property with the intentions of acquiring it,” McGee said.
McGee said local residents have, for a long time, been requesting a local driver’s license renewal and testing station versus having to drive to the surrounding counties such as Bolivar, Leflore or even Sunflower County.
“We’re trying to honor the request that has been made by the citizens now that we hold the deed to the Depot Building,” McGee said.
For more than a year, the Highway 82 location has been listed as “temporarily closed.”
He added there’s no set timeline, but he and the rest of the board are trying to meet the needs of local residents so they won’t have to go to outside counties to do something as simple as get an ID, ID renewal or to take a driver’s license exam.
