Greenville City Council members agreed at a special meeting on Thursday to immediately repair two failed junction boxes threatening a gas line supplying USG Interiors, Inc.
The council first heard from city engineer William Burle regarding storm sewer failure at the USG Interiors Inc. pipeline behind the former American Legion building on Highway 1 N.
“There’s a storm sewer that drains from Carver’s Circle to the south of the railroad tracks and into the ditch behind the old American Legion building,” Burle said to the council.”
He explained that two junction boxes in the vicinity failed due to the flood that occurred this summer.
Burle informed the council a gas line is threatened by the failure of those junction boxes and therefore needs immediate repair.
The six-inch gas line, supplies USG Interior’s plant and is owned and maintained by USG Interiors Inc.
Burle told the council he felt the point repair should be considered an emergency and repaired due to the possible ramifications.
A motion was made to immediately begin the point repair and the council unanimously agreed.
Bids for the job will open on Nov. 1.
Other matters included council’s consideration to hear presentations of the electronic water meter reading system; council’s consideration to hold a discussion regarding a cave-in at the intersection of West Reed Road and Canal Street; council’s consideration to approve of advertising for bids for the Comprehensive Sanitary Sewer Improvements Project SRF-C280767-10 Contract No. 1 Hancock Force Main Improvements Project; council’s consideration to rescind Order of Oct. 15 that awarded five sewer point repairs to Portland Utilities Construction and rather awarding seven point repairs based on quotes received to the lowest and best bidder per address.
