The Greenville Arts Council is hosting their latest installment of their “Do Drink the Brown Water” Summer Literary Series Thursday in the city of Leland.
Tonight’s event, featuring Lovejoy Boteler’s book, “Crooked Snake: The Life and Crimes of Albert Lepard,” will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Leland Thompson House, 111 West Deer Creek Drive.
Attendees will have a chance to get a signed copy of the book book signing, hear a reading and mingle at the reception.
The event is free and open to the public, but folks should bring along cash for beverages.
Wine and beer is costs $3 for non-GAC members and GAC members drink for free.
Sandra Stillman, assistant organizer of the event, said she is looking forward to the event.
“The public is graciously welcome to this and all of the events we have offered in the future. We look forward to meeting everyone and the author as well,” Stillman said.
This summer literary series started back in the summer of 2018 and has continued this year. There are more installments to come.
About the book
According to the book’s description on Amazon, “Crooked Snake: The Life and Crimes of Albert Lepard” is the true story of Lepard, sentenced to life in Parchman for the murder of 74-year-old Mary Young in 1959. During the course of his sentence, Lepard escaped from prison six times in 14 years.
In “Crooked Snake,” Boteler pieces together the story of this cold-blooded murderer’s life using both historical records and personal interviews ― more than 70 in all ― with ex-convicts who gravitate to and ran with Lepard, the family members who fed and sheltered the fugitive during his escapes, the law officers who hunted him, and the regular folks who were victimized in his terrible wake.
