There is an opportunity for local residents making college preparations to share information about college and college-planning resources.
Get2College, a program with the Woodard Hines Education Foundation, and the City of Greenville are hosting the Greenville College Night from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the William Alexander Percy Library, 341 Main St.
The event is for anyone interested in learning more about enrolling in a community college or four-year university.
Courtney Lange, Director of Communications & Impact for the Woodward Hines Education Foundation, said they hope to provide practical advice to students and parents and to be a resource by sharing information about college financial aid and the college timeline.
“The college process can be complex and intimidating, especially for students who are the first in their families to go to college,” Lange said. “Through this event, we hope to help share information and resources that help students and families see that college is within reach. There will be a presentation, but also a time for participants to have conversations and ask questions from our Get2College counselors.”
The presentation will cover information on college planning and applying for state and federal financial aid. Topics will include: Information about types of colleges and degrees; how families will pay for college; college application information; and applying for financial aid and completing the FAFSA. There will also be an opportunity for participants to ask questions.
Lange said they define college as any degree or credential beyond high school.
“This can be a two- or four-year college degree, but also a certificate from a community college program. We think it is important to say this because students often associate college with four-year colleges or universities only,” Lange said. “And, while they may choose to attend a four-year school, there are other options that are both high-quality and affordable. Research shows that most jobs that pay a family-sustaining wage do require some kind of education beyond high school.”
Refreshments will be served at the event.
Get2College is planning to hold more events like this throughout the Delta.
“We absolutely plan to continue these types of events throughout the Delta,” Lange said. “We have two more planned later this year in Greenwood and Clarksdale. In Greenwood, we will be hosting the Greenwood College Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m on Saturday, November 9, at the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce Building. In Clarksdale, we will be hosting the Clarksdale Area College Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 4, in the gym at City of Truth Church.”
