The Greenville Fire Department will host a job fair beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday at 2352 S. Main St.
The GFD is currently accepting applications for entry level fire fighters.
GFD training chief Lonagcio Smith said interested candidates would benefit greatly by attending the job fair.
“They get a chance to ask as many questions as they want about the fire service and about the requirements,” he said.
Application requirements include a valid driver’s license or ID, high school diploma or G.E.D. and applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
Employee benefits include PERS retirement insurance (medical, dental and vision), two weeks paid vacation, sick leave and shift swap privileges.
“We’re going to explain everything to them — details about pay and about benefits as far as insurance, sick leave, and retirement,” Smith reiterated. “We’re going to give the information about what it means to be a fire fighter and what they can do to set themselves up for success.”
Smith highlighted being a firefighter is a job that does not lay off so it offers the opportunity for job security.
“This is a job where you basically come in and you’re trained from beginning to end — you never stop training and you get to travel to classes and school and things like that,” he said.
Smith also noted the opportunity to give back to the community.
“It’s a job where you can become a part of an actual team and it’s really a great career for anyone that’s looking to have a job with security and medical benefits such as eye insurance and dental insurance as well as being able to insure your family,” he said.
Smith explained how it’s possible a lot of people are not aware of the benefits and other perks of being a firefighter and he’d like to change that and make more people aware of what the fire department right here in Greenville has to offer.
“If they get here, they will see the benefits,” he said.
