LELAND — School is back in session next week, and the Leland Police Department is lending a hand to ensure children have what they need to before getting back in the classroom.
The Leland Police Department is hosting a 100 Backpack Giveaway starting at 10 a.m. Friday at the front of the Leland Police Department, 320 N. Broad St.
Backpacks will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and the event will continue while supplies last.
Police Chief PK Nelson said this is the first time LPD has hosted a school supplies giveaway, but he felt it was important to help those who might not be able to afford some of the students’ required items.
“I love people and some people are not financially able to get all of their children’s items they need for school. It’s a way for us to give back to the community,” he said.
The 100 backpacks, he said, were purchased at Walmart and will also include other supplies, such as paper, pens, pencils and more. Nelson said they may also have chips and sandwiches available for those who stop by.
“We’re going to start at 10 a.m. until it’s all given away and we will wish them well for the school year,” Nelson said.
