The Leland School District continues making plans for renovations at their schools, with hopes for more plans if their proposed bond is voted for.
At the Aug. 19 Leland School District board meeting, representatives with Malone Roofing Company appeared before the Leland Board of Trustee to discuss the future plans for roof repairs on three buildings in the district.
Leland High School, Edna Scott Elementary School and Leland School Park Gymnasium will be receiving repairs beginning in October.
Malone Roofing Company discussed the process and the timeline for the work to take place. Beginning with analysis of the current roof conditions, labor and material cost to complete the project intervals, while students are not at school, which would take up to 8 months total.
“Malone Roofing Company along with the Bailey Architect Firm will work collaboratively to oversee the project management on behalf of the Leland School District to ensure that all roofs meet expectations for commercial buildings,” said the Rev. Jessie King, Leland School District superintendent.
The board of trustees moved to continue the partnership between the companies and ensure they will provide the board with updates.
The total projected cost for this project is $1.6 million and the board anticipates more repairs to the district infrastructure providing the bond passes on Sept. 10, said King, referring to the Sept. 10 bond election.
The Leland School Board will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. today to discuss the upcoming Bond Election, which will take place Sep. 10.
The voting precinct will be at W.E. Bufkin Auditorium at Leland High School, 404 East 3rd St., Leland. Only Leland School District residents are eligible to vote.
The bond, which is for $8.75 million, is requested by the district for renovations needed throughout the district.
The bond, if approved, would affect city residents by raising the millage rate by 14 mills.
If the bond is approved, projects may include replacing the old boiler heating system from the high school, replacing flooring in schools, cooling systems, upgrading restrooms in elementary and preschools, creating a science lab for elementary, physical education space for elementary, roofing work for the high school and elementary, HVAC, upgrading the high school entrance, renovating the high school athletics complex (football field) and new intercom systems at all schools.
