A man was found dead on the highway this weekend after being run over by multiple vehicles.
At 3:15 a.m. Saturday, July 13, officers with the Greenville Police Department were dispatched to 1800 Highway 82 West, where they found a black male laying in the highway.
“Emergency medical personal was dispatched and the Washington County Coroner was notified. The subject was declared deceased on scene,” said Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant.
The person who died has been identified as 42-year-old Fredrick Wilkins, of Greenville.
Merchant said investigators with GPD’s Criminal Investigation Division the been investigating the incident.
During the preliminary investigation, which included witness accounts and surveillance, Merchant said it appeared Wilkins had laid down in the highway and may have fallen asleep.
As a result, Wilkins was struck by passing motorists while laying on the highway.
Merchant said it is unclear how many vehicles may have run him over before police arrived on scene.
Officers are now actively searching to identify the vehicles that ran Wilkins’ body over.
