Local police are investigating the death of man found inside a manhole in downtown Greenville this morning.
At about 11:30 a.m. today, officers with the Greenville Police Department went to the 800 block of Washington Avenue in reference to a possible body found inside a manhole after receiving a call from a concerned local resident.
Police discovered a 60-year-old man’s body inside the manhole, which was full of water.
“Officers confirmed the information and emergency medical personal along with the Washington County Coroner were called,” Assistant Police Chief Michael Merchant said, noting the man was pronounced dead on scene. The man's identity is being withheld until his family has been notified.
Merchant said no trauma was immediately identified and the body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
“This case is being handled as a death investigation,” Merchant said.
